Col des Roches is a mountain pass located in the Jura range, straddling the border between Switzerland (Neuchâtel canton) and France (Doubs department). At an elevation of about 920 meters, it offers a gateway to the rugged limestone landscapes of the Jura. The pass is a popular starting point for hikes that wind through forests, pastures, and rocky outcrops. From the col, you can see the Doubs River valley and, on clear days, the Alps in the distance. The area is known for its unique geological features, including karst formations and sinkholes. The border crossing here is informal, with a simple sign marking the boundary. Hikers can explore trails that lead to viewpoints like the Roche Devant or descend into the Doubs valley. In winter, the pass is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The surrounding area is sparsely populated, offering a sense of wilderness and tranquility. The Col des Roches is also a point of interest for those driving the Route des Crêtes, a scenic road along the Jura crest.
