Schiffenensee is a man-made reservoir stretching between Murten and Fribourg, created by damming the Saane/Sarine River. Its calm, turquoise waters and rolling green hills make it a favorite spot for water sports enthusiasts. Visitors can rent sailboats or windsurfing gear at the lake's small marina, or simply relax on the grassy banks. The surrounding trails offer easy to moderate hikes with panoramic views of the lake and the distant Alps. In summer, the lake is a hub for swimming and picnicking, while autumn brings a tapestry of golden foliage. Unlike the more crowded Lake Murten, Schiffenensee feels quieter and more natural, with only a few small villages dotting its shoreline. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of waterfowl, including grebes and herons. The reservoir also serves as a vital water source for the region, blending recreation with practical function.

Don't miss

  • Hiking trails with lake and mountain views
