The Middle Bridge (Mittlere Brücke) is a historic and iconic crossing over the Rhine River, linking the Großbasel (Greater Basel) and Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel) districts. Built in the 13th century, it is the oldest bridge in Basel and a beloved landmark. Today, the bridge is a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly thoroughfare, with a central section for vehicles. Walking across, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the river, the old town's spires, and the distant Black Forest. At the Kleinbasel end, a small chapel and a statue of the legendary bridge builder, the 'Bridgeman,' add character. The bridge is especially picturesque at sunset when the light catches the water and the historic buildings along the riverbanks.
