Fort Fredrick stands on a promontory overlooking Trincomalee Harbour, originally built by the Portuguese in 1623 and later fortified by the Dutch and British. Today, it serves as a Sri Lankan military base, but visitors can explore parts of the outer ramparts and bastions. The thick stone walls, cannons, and arched gateways evoke centuries of colonial history. From the fort, you get sweeping views of the harbor and the Indian Ocean. Inside the grounds, you'll also find a small Hindu temple and the remains of a Dutch cemetery, adding layers to the site's rich past.
