Star Fort, locally known as 'Dutch Star Fort,' is a compact but striking fortification built by the Dutch in 1765. Its unique five-pointed star shape allowed defenders to cover all approaches. The fort sits on the banks of the Nilwala River, surrounded by a moat that once served as a defensive barrier. Inside, visitors can explore the small museum displaying colonial artifacts, walk along the thick ramparts, and enjoy views of the river and Matara town. The fort is remarkably intact and offers a quiet glimpse into Sri Lanka's colonial past.
