Matara Fort is a large Dutch fort built in the 17th century, enclosing a significant area of the old town. Unlike Star Fort, this fort is more of a walled precinct, with thick stone ramparts lining the Nilwala River and the Indian Ocean. Today, the fort houses several government offices, including the District Secretariat and a courthouse, giving it a lived-in feel. Visitors can stroll along the ramparts, peer through old bastions, and watch boats on the river. The fort's grassy parade ground and colonial-era buildings offer a peaceful contrast to the busy streets outside.

Don't miss

  • Walk the ramparts for views of the Nilwala River and ocean
  • See the Dutch Reformed Church and colonial buildings inside the fort
  • Watch fishing boats and river life from the fort walls
