Beira Lake is a tranquil body of water that once formed part of Colombo's defensive fortifications. Today, it offers a serene escape amid the city's high-rises. Visitors can take a pedal boat or swan-shaped boat out onto the lake, passing by the iconic Seema Malaka temple (a Buddhist meditation center built on stilts) and the old Colombo Dutch Hospital. The lake's shores are dotted with food stalls and benches, making it a favorite spot for an evening stroll or a quick break from sightseeing.

Don't miss

  • Rent a swan-shaped pedal boat for a leisurely ride on the lake.
  • Visit the Seema Malaka temple, a floating Buddhist shrine designed by Geoffrey Bawa.
  • Enjoy a drink or meal at the historic Dutch Hospital precinct overlooking the water.
