Lankarama is an ancient stupa in Anuradhapura, built by King Valagamba in the 1st century BCE. Its unique circular design, with a raised platform and concentric rows of stone pillars that once supported a roof, sets it apart from other stupas in the area. Visitors can walk around the structure, observe the intricate brickwork, and imagine the original wooden superstructure that sheltered the relic chamber. The site offers a peaceful atmosphere, with scattered ruins and a large seated Buddha statue nearby.

Don't miss

  • Explore the circular platform with its hundreds of granite pillars, remnants of an ancient roofed hall.
  • See the large seated Buddha statue at the entrance, a later addition to the site.
  • Observe the detailed brickwork and moonstone carvings at the base of the stupa.
