The Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid's grandest monuments, a monumental neoclassical stone gateway standing proudly on the Plaza de la Independencia, on the edge of the Retiro Park. Built in the 18th century as a triumphal entrance to the city, its five archways (three large, two rectangular) and crowning sculptures make it a beloved symbol of Madrid, floodlit and striking at night. Pre-dating Paris's Arc de Triomphe, it's a fine example of the grand civic architecture of Bourbon Madrid.
It's a monument to admire rather than enter, on a busy roundabout, but its position by the Retiro Park makes it an easy and rewarding stop, combine a look (especially lovely at sunset or when lit) with a stroll through Madrid's most beautiful park next door.

A bit of history
Commissioned by King Charles III and completed in 1778 to designs by Francesco Sabatini, the Puerta de Alcalá replaced an older city gate as a grand triumphal entrance to Madrid from the east. It now stands as an iconic free-standing monument and symbol of the capital.
