El Rastro

El Rastro is Madrid's most iconic open-air flea market, held every Sunday and public holiday in the La Latina neighborhood. It sprawls along the Ribera de Curtidores street and into adjoining squares and side streets, creating a maze of hundreds of stalls. The market has been operating since at least the 18th century, originally as a place for tanners (curtidores) to sell leather goods. Today, you'll find an eclectic mix: antique furniture, vintage clothing, old coins and stamps, second-hand books, handmade jewelry, flamenco accessories, and quirky collectibles. The atmosphere is energetic and chaotic, with bargain hunters, tourists, and locals jostling through the narrow lanes. Street performers, musicians, and impromptu art displays add to the carnival-like feel. Beyond the main market, the surrounding streets are filled with permanent shops selling antiques, art, and curiosities. After browsing, many visitors head to the nearby tapas bars in La Latina for a Sunday lunch of callos (tripe) or cocido (stew). El Rastro is as much about the experience of wandering and people-watching as it is about shopping.
