Toledo Cathedral, officially the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, is a monumental Gothic structure that dominates the city's skyline. Built between 1226 and 1493 on the site of a former mosque, it is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Spain. Visitors are immediately struck by the soaring nave, intricate stonework, and the dazzling array of chapels. The cathedral's treasury includes works by El Greco, such as 'The Disrobing of Christ' (El Espolio), as well as paintings by Goya, Titian, and Velázquez. The choir stalls, carved with scenes from the Conquest of Granada, and the transparente, a Baroque altarpiece illuminated by a skylight, are highlights. The cathedral also houses a museum with religious artifacts and manuscripts. The experience is immersive, with the scent of incense and the soft glow of stained glass creating a reverent atmosphere. Its location in the historic center makes it a natural starting point for exploring Toledo.
