The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes is a serene Franciscan monastery founded by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Toro. Its most striking feature is the two-tiered cloister, a masterpiece of Isabelline Gothic style with intricate tracery and heraldic decorations. The church interior is adorned with the coats of arms of the Catholic Monarchs and features a stunning altarpiece. The monastery is also known for the chains hanging from its exterior walls, these were used to free Christian prisoners during the Reconquista and were later displayed as symbols of triumph. The peaceful garden and the views of the Tagus River from the upper cloister add to the charm. It's a quieter alternative to the cathedral, offering a glimpse into the religious and political ambitions of Spain's most famous monarchs.
