The Tomb of Christopher Columbus is one of the most iconic features of Seville Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tomb, created in 1891 by sculptor Arturo Mélida, is a grand bronze and marble structure held aloft by four larger-than-life figures representing the kingdoms of Castile, León, Aragon, and Navarre. The explorer's remains were brought to Seville from Havana in 1899 after Cuba gained independence. The tomb sits in the cathedral's south transept, drawing crowds who come to pay respects. While there is debate over whether the remains are truly Columbus's, the monument remains a powerful symbol of Seville's connection to the Age of Discovery. The cathedral itself, with its Gothic architecture and vast size, provides a fitting backdrop.
