The Royal Shipyards of Seville, known as the Reales Atarazanas, are a remarkable example of Gothic industrial architecture. Built in the 13th century under King Alfonso X, these vast brick and stone halls were originally used for constructing and repairing ships for the Castilian navy and later for the fleets that sailed to the Americas. The shipyards played a crucial role in Seville's rise as a major port for trade with the New World. Today, the restored complex houses a museum dedicated to the city's maritime history, with exhibits on shipbuilding, navigation, and the commerce that flowed through Seville. The space also hosts temporary art exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events, blending history with contemporary culture. Visitors can admire the soaring arched ceilings and the sheer scale of the building, which gives a sense of the industrious past.
