Mouro Island is a tiny, rocky islet located at the entrance to Santander Bay, just a short boat ride from the city. Its most prominent feature is the 19th-century lighthouse, which still guides ships into the harbor. The island is a protected natural area, home to colonies of seabirds such as cormorants and gulls, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. Boat tours depart regularly from the Santander waterfront, offering close-up views of the island and the lighthouse, as well as panoramic vistas of the bay and the surrounding coastline. Some trips also include snorkeling or swimming stops in the clear waters nearby. While landing on the island is generally not permitted to protect the wildlife, the boat excursion provides a refreshing maritime perspective of Santander.
