Torre Río Real is a well-preserved 16th-century watchtower standing sentinel on the beach near Marbella, at the mouth of the Río Real. It was part of a chain of defensive towers built along the Andalusian coast to guard against Barbary pirate raids. Today, it offers a tangible link to the region's turbulent past, set against the backdrop of modern beach resorts. Visitors can walk around the tower, which is made of local stone and features a conical roof and a small door high above ground level, once accessed by a removable ladder. The surrounding area is a peaceful stretch of sand with views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Blanca mountains. What makes it distinctive is its stark contrast with the luxury hotels nearby, serving as a reminder of a time when this coast was a frontier. It's a great spot for a quiet stroll, photography, or a picnic while imagining the watchmen who once scanned the horizon for sails.
