Tucked away on a quiet hillside near Mahon, the English Cemetery is a poignant reminder of Menorca's British period (1708–1802). This small, walled cemetery contains the graves of British soldiers, sailors, and their families who died while stationed on the island. The headstones, many weathered by time, bear inscriptions in English, telling stories of lives cut short by disease or conflict. A small chapel stands at the entrance, restored and used for occasional services. The atmosphere is peaceful and contemplative, with cypress trees and wildflowers softening the stone. What makes it distinctive is its intimate scale and the tangible connection to a lesser-known chapter of Menorcan history. It's a place for quiet reflection, away from the tourist crowds.

Don't miss

  • Reading the historic headstones with British names and dates
  • Visiting the restored chapel with its simple interior
