Teatro Real (Royal Theatre) is Madrid's leading opera house, located on the Plaza de Oriente opposite the Royal Palace. The building is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, with a grand façade, sweeping staircases, and a lavish auditorium adorned with red velvet and gold leaf. Inaugurated in 1850, it has undergone several renovations, the most recent in 1997, which modernized its stage and acoustics while preserving its historic charm. The theater seats about 1,700 people and is renowned for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. The main season runs from September to July, featuring a mix of classic operas (Verdi, Puccini, Mozart), contemporary works, ballet performances by the Compañía Nacional de Danza, and orchestral concerts. Even if you don't attend a performance, you can take a guided tour to explore the grand foyer, the royal box, the rehearsal rooms, and the stage. The rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the Royal Palace and the Madrid skyline. Teatro Real is not just a venue; it's a cultural institution that embodies Madrid's passion for the performing arts.
