Plaza Mayor is a monumental square in central Madrid, surrounded by uniform three-story residential buildings with 237 balconies overlooking the cobblestone plaza. Built during the Habsburg period, it has served as a marketplace, bullring, and site for public executions and festivals. Today, it is a vibrant gathering place for locals and tourists, lined with outdoor cafés, souvenir shops, and traditional pastry shops. The centerpiece is a bronze equestrian statue of King Philip III, who commissioned the square's construction. The plaza's architecture is characterized by its symmetrical arcades, slate spires, and the iconic Casa de la Panadería, a bakery guild building adorned with frescoes. Visitors can enjoy a coffee at one of the terraces, browse for handmade crafts, or simply soak in the lively atmosphere.

Don't miss

  • The equestrian statue of Philip III at the center.
  • Casa de la Panadería with its colorful frescoes and tourist information office.
  • Traditional shops under the arcades, selling hats, fans, and ceramics.
