Mercado de San Miguel is a beautifully restored iron-and-glass market located in the heart of Madrid, just steps from Plaza Mayor. Originally built in 1916 as a wholesale food market, it was meticulously renovated and reopened in 2009 as a gourmet food hall. Inside, you'll find dozens of stalls selling everything from fresh oysters and jamón ibérico to artisan cheeses, wines, and creative tapas. The atmosphere is bustling and social, with high communal tables where locals and tourists alike gather to sample small plates and drinks. Unlike a traditional market where you buy ingredients to take home, San Miguel is designed for immediate consumption: you can wander from stall to stall, order a glass of cava, a montadito (small sandwich), or a portion of paella, and enjoy it on the spot. The market's distinctive architecture, with its ornate ironwork, glass panels, and decorative tiles, adds to the experience, making it a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. It's especially vibrant in the evenings and on weekends, when the space fills with the chatter of diners and the clinking of glasses.

Don't miss

  • Sample jamón ibérico from a dedicated ham stall, sliced to order.
  • Try fresh seafood like oysters, prawns, and ceviche at the central bar.
  • Sip a glass of Spanish wine or vermouth while people-watching.
  • Watch chefs prepare mini paellas and tortillas in open kitchens.
  • Browse artisan chocolates, cheeses, and olive oils to take home.
