The Casa de Colón (Columbus House) is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a complex of fine old Canarian houses in the atmospheric Vegueta old town, now a museum exploring the Canary Islands' pivotal role in the Atlantic voyages of Christopher Columbus. The islands were a last stop to resupply before crossing to the Americas, and Columbus is traditionally said to have stayed here. The museum covers his expeditions, the history of the Canaries, and the islands' links between Europe and the New World, alongside pre-Columbian American artefacts.
The building itself is a highlight, with carved wooden balconies, leafy courtyards (home to parrots), ornate doorways, and traditional Canarian architecture. Set in cobbled Vegueta, alongside the cathedral and other historic sights, it's an easy and rewarding stop. Allow an hour or so to explore the rooms and courtyards.
