The Siege of Fuenterrabía from 1523 to 1524 occurred during the Italian Wars, when French troops occupied the town in 1521 and held it against Spanish efforts to retake it. After a prolonged blockade and intermittent fighting, Spanish forces under the Duke of Alba finally recaptured the town in February 1524. This event is less commemorated than the 1638 siege but is a crucial part of Hondarribia's military history. Visitors can see the remnants of Renaissance fortifications and the historic center, which reflect the town's strategic importance.
