Pheasant Island (Isla de los Faisanes) is a small, uninhabited island in the Bidasoa River that forms part of the border between Spain and France. Its unique status as a condominium means it is jointly administered by both countries, switching sovereignty every six months. Historically, it served as a neutral meeting ground for diplomatic negotiations, most famously the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees that ended the Franco-Spanish war. Today, the island is not open to the public, but visitors can view it from the riverbanks in Hondarribia or Hendaye. Its intriguing history and symbolic role as a place of peace make it a fascinating sight for history enthusiasts.
