Perched on the hillside across from the Alhambra, Sacromonte is one of Granada's most atmospheric neighborhoods, known for its centuries-old cave houses (cuevas) carved into the sandstone. This historic gitano (Romani) quarter offers a glimpse into traditional Andalusian life, with narrow winding streets and stunning views of the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada. The main attraction is experiencing flamenco in its most authentic setting: small, candlelit cave venues where the raw emotion of the dance and guitar resonates off the earthen walls. Visitors can also explore the Sacromonte Abbey, a 17th-century monastery built on the site where early Christian martyrs were said to be buried. The neighborhood's museum, the Centro de Interpretación del Sacromonte, explains the history of cave dwelling and flamenco. Despite its tourist appeal, Sacromonte retains a bohemian, lived-in character, with local residents still occupying many caves.
