The Gate of the Pomegranates (Puerta de las Granadas) is a monumental archway that serves as the ceremonial entrance to the Alhambra forest, the wooded hillside leading up to the Alhambra and Generalife. Built in 1536 under Emperor Charles V, the gate is a blend of Renaissance and Mudejar styles, featuring three arches: a large central arch for carriages and two smaller side arches for pedestrians. Its name comes from the three stone pomegranates (granadas) that crown the gate, a symbol of the city. As you pass through, you enter a shaded path lined with elms and cypresses, known as the Cuesta de Gomérez, which winds uphill past fountains and viewpoints. The gate itself is a popular photo spot, with its weathered stone and the iconic pomegranates against the sky. It's not just a gateway but a transition from the bustling city into the serene, historic precinct of the Alhambra. The forest is a pleasant walk, especially in spring when the trees are green and the fountains are flowing. Many visitors rush past, but taking a moment to appreciate the gate's details, the imperial eagle, the coat of arms, and the pomegranates, adds depth to the Alhambra experience.
