Our Lady of Covadonga, also known as La Santina, is the patron saint of the Principality of Asturias. Her small wooden statue, dating from the 16th century, is housed in the Santa Cueva de Covadonga. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to Pelagius, the first king of Asturias, before the Battle of Covadonga in 722. The statue depicts Mary holding the Christ child, and is venerated by thousands of pilgrims annually. The feast day on September 8 draws large crowds for celebrations and processions.
