Just a few kilometers south of Benidorm, Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa in Valencian) offers a refreshing contrast to its neighbor's high-rise skyline. The old town is a maze of narrow streets lined with pastel-colored houses, many adorned with flower-filled balconies. The waterfront promenade runs along a lovely sandy beach, Playa Centro, where locals and visitors alike relax under colorful umbrellas. The town is renowned for its chocolate tradition, with several family-run factories such as Valor and Clavileño offering free tastings and museum tours. The fishing port is still active, and you can watch boats unload the day's catch or sample fresh seafood at harborside restaurants. Villajoyosa also hosts a vibrant Moors and Christians festival in July, complete with parades and mock battles. For history buffs, the Torre de la Vila (a medieval watchtower) and the archaeological museum provide insight into the town's Roman and Iberian past.
