The Basilica of Santa Maria is the oldest church in Alicante, built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site of a former mosque. Its architecture blends Gothic and Baroque styles, with a striking Baroque altarpiece that dominates the interior. The church's exterior is relatively plain, but inside it is richly decorated, with intricate woodwork and gilded details. The altarpiece, created by the sculptor Juan Bautista Borja in the 18th century, depicts scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The basilica also features a small museum displaying religious artifacts. Its location in the heart of the old town makes it a convenient stop on any walking tour.
