Daereungwon is a sprawling grassy park in central Gyeongju containing 23 large royal tombs of the Silla dynasty. The most famous is Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tomb), which was excavated in 1973 and is open to the public. Inside, visitors see the original burial chamber and a replica of the exquisite gold crown and belt found there, along with the namesake painting of a flying horse on birch bark. The tomb mounds create a serene landscape, with walking paths winding among the green hills.
