Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve protects a remnant of indigenous forest and fynbos in the Jonkershoek Valley. Its trails lead through shady groves of yellowwood and stinkwood trees, alongside streams, and up to viewpoints over the valley. Birdlife is abundant, with species like the Knysna woodpecker and African fish eagle. Distinctive for its conservation of rare flora and its serene, less-crowded atmosphere compared to other reserves, it offers a genuine wilderness experience close to Stellenbosch.
