The Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel, completed in 1932, is Korea's first undersea tunnel and a beloved walking attraction. Stretching 483 meters, it connects the mainland to Mireuk Island, allowing visitors to stroll beneath the sea. The tunnel's arched concrete walls and dim lighting create a nostalgic atmosphere, with small alcoves and historical photos along the way. At low tide, you can glimpse the water through small windows. It's a distinctive blend of engineering history and coastal charm, offering a cool respite from summer heat and a unique perspective on Tongyeong's maritime landscape.
Don't miss
- Walk the entire 483-meter length and feel the slight slope as you descend and ascend
- Pause at the viewing windows to see seawater and marine life at low tide
- Read the historical plaques detailing the tunnel's construction and significance
