Muratie is one of Stellenbosch's oldest wine estates, dating back to the 17th century. Nestled on the slopes of the Knorhoek Valley, the estate offers a journey through time with its original Cape Dutch buildings, ancient oak trees, and a cozy tasting room filled with antiques and portraits of the founding families. Visitors can sample a range of wines, including the renowned Muratie Ansela van de Caab and the estate's signature port-style wines. The estate is also famous for its quirky characters, like the former owner who painted wine labels himself. The experience is intimate and unhurried, with knowledgeable staff sharing stories of the estate's past. A visit here feels like stepping into a living museum of Cape wine culture.

A bit of history

Founded in 1685 by the first free black wine farmer in South Africa, Muratie has been owned by the same family for generations. The estate's name comes from a Portuguese settler who fell in love with a slave woman, Ansela van de Caab, and named the farm after her.
