Kowyn Pass is a dramatic mountain pass on the R533 between Graskop and Bosbokrand, descending through dense forest and open grassland. The road features tight hairpin bends and several pull-offs where drivers can stop to admire panoramic vistas of the Lowveld and distant Kruger National Park. Named after a 19th-century Swazi chief, the pass is a favorite for scenic drives and photography, especially at sunset when the lowland plains glow golden.
Don't miss
- Stop at the summit viewpoint for a sweeping panorama of the Lowveld escarpment.
- Drive the pass slowly to appreciate the engineering and changing vegetation zones.
- Picnic at one of the designated rest areas with views of the Blyde River Canyon.
