The Actions along the Matanikau refer to a series of fierce engagements between US Marines and Japanese forces from August to November 1942. Today, the riverbanks are a park-like area with walking trails that pass by remnants of foxholes, gun emplacements, and a small memorial. Visitors can cross the Matanikau Bridge and explore the terrain where Marines launched amphibious assaults and fought house-to-house in the nearby village of Kokumbona. The site offers a tangible link to the campaign's pivotal river battles.

Don't miss

  • Walk the Matanikau Bridge and see the river where key assaults occurred
