Planina Cave is a 6.5-kilometer-long active river cave, part of the same karst system as Postojna. Its main attraction is the underground confluence of the Pivka and Rak rivers, creating one of Europe's largest subterranean waterways. Visitors take a guided boat tour along the Pivka River, gliding past massive stalactite columns and through spacious halls. The cave is less commercialized than Postojna, offering a more intimate and adventurous experience. Highlights include the Great Hall (over 40 meters high) and the “Siphon,” where the river disappears into a narrow passage. The constant roar of water and the cool, damp air enhance the sense of exploring a hidden world.

Don't miss

  • The boat ride through the main channel, where the boatman navigates by lamplight past towering formations.
  • The underground confluence point, where two distinct rivers merge in a dramatic swirl.
  • The Great Hall, a cavern so large it could house a cathedral, with echoes that amplify the river's sound.
