Mount Matajur rises to 1,642 meters above the Soča Valley, offering hikers a challenging but rewarding climb with panoramic vistas of the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea on clear days. The mountain is historically significant as the site of a World War I battle where German Lieutenant Erwin Rommel led a small force to capture the summit from Italian defenders in October 1917. Today, a stone monument marks the event. Trails wind through beech forests and alpine meadows, with the summit providing a 360-degree view that stretches to the Dolomites.

Don't miss

  • Reach the summit for sweeping views from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic.
  • Find the monument commemorating Rommel's 1917 assault.
  • Hike through diverse terrain: forests, meadows, and rocky slopes.
