Perched on a sheer cliff 130 metres above Lake Bled, Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia and the source of the region's most spectacular view, a sweeping panorama over the emerald lake, its island church, and the surrounding Julian Alps. The medieval fortress, arranged around two courtyards on different levels, houses a museum on the region's history, a working printing press and forge demonstrating old crafts, a chapel, and a wine cellar where you can bottle and seal your own souvenir.
It's reached by a short but steep walk up from the lakeshore (or a drive), and the climb is rewarded with the definitive Bled vista, especially in the soft light of morning or late afternoon. The castle restaurant terrace makes a memorable spot for a meal or coffee with that view.
