The Basilica of St. James is the spiritual heart of Levoča and a pinnacle of Gothic architecture in Slovakia. Its interior is dominated by the towering wooden altar, carved by Master Paul between 1507 and 1517, standing 18.6 meters tall and depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ. The church also features Gothic frescoes, a stone pulpit, and side chapels. Visitors are awed by the intricate detail of the altarpiece, which remains the tallest of its kind in the world.
