Dominating the Danube from a high ridge, Petrovaradin Fortress is a massive Baroque citadel built by the Habsburgs in the 1690s. Nicknamed the 'Gibraltar of the Danube,' it features a complex network of underground military galleries and tunnels stretching over 16 kilometers. Visitors can climb the iconic clock tower, walk along the ramparts for panoramic river views, and explore the fortress's courtyards and bastions. Every July, the fortress transforms into the main venue for the EXIT Festival, drawing international music fans.
Don't miss
- The 16-km system of underground military tunnels (guided tours available)
- The clock tower with its large minute hand and small hour hand (an old trick to tell time from afar)
- The Upper Fortress with its Baroque gates and the statue of Saint John Nepomuk
