Čegar is a hill overlooking Niš, marked by a stone monument shaped like a stylized fortress. It honors the Serbian insurgents who, led by Stevan Sinđelić, fought a desperate battle here in 1809. When defeat was imminent, Sinđelić fired into a powder magazine, killing himself and many enemies. The site offers panoramic views and a somber reminder of Serbia's struggle for independence.
