Touba is Senegal's second-largest city and the undisputed spiritual capital of the Mouride order. Founded by Sheikh Amadou Bamba, it is a place of pilgrimage where millions converge annually, especially for the Grand Magal. The city revolves around the Great Mosque, but its streets are lined with markets, religious schools, and homes of disciples. Visitors will find a unique atmosphere of piety and energy, with men in flowing boubous and women in colorful attire. The city's prohibition on alcohol and tobacco reflects its sacred character.
