The Island of Príncipe Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 2012, encompasses the entire island and its surrounding waters. It protects a mosaic of ecosystems: lowland rainforest, savanna, mangroves, coral reefs, and nesting beaches for sea turtles. Visitors can experience eco-lodges, community-run tours, and conservation projects. The reserve promotes low-impact tourism, allowing travelers to explore pristine beaches like Praia Banana, snorkel in clear waters, and learn about local culture in villages such as Santo António.

Don't miss

  • Snorkel at Praia Banana to see colorful reef fish and sea turtles
  • Visit the Roça Sundy plantation for a glimpse of colonial history and local crafts
  • Join a community-led night walk to observe nesting sea turtles (seasonal)
