The Basilica di San Marino is the principal church of the republic, built in neoclassical style in the 19th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Dedicated to Saint Marinus, the founder of San Marino, the basilica houses his relics beneath the altar. The interior is light and airy, with Corinthian columns, a coffered ceiling, and a statue of the saint. It remains an active place of worship and a site of pilgrimage.
