The Egyptian Gate of Tsarskoye Selo is a striking entrance gate built in 1829 to mark the boundary of the imperial park. Designed by architect Adam Menelaws, it features a massive arched gateway flanked by pylons decorated with painted hieroglyphs, lotus motifs, and seated sphinxes. The gate's style reflects the 19th-century fascination with ancient Egypt. Visitors can walk through the gate, photograph its vivid blue and gold details, and appreciate its contrast with the surrounding Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. It is a free-standing landmark, easily accessible from the Catherine Palace.

Don't miss

  • Photograph the painted hieroglyphs and lotus columns on the gate's pylons.
  • Look for the two sphinx statues guarding the entrance, each with a distinct expression.
  • Walk through the gate and note the contrast between its Egyptian style and the palace's Russian Baroque.
