Sergei Obraztsov (1901–1992) was a pioneering puppeteer who founded the State Academic Central Puppet Theatre in 1931. The monument was erected in 2001, on the centenary of his birth, to honor his contributions to the arts. It was created by sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov.
