Biserica Manastirii

Biserica Manastirii, also known as the Monastery Church, is a Gothic-style Lutheran church located within the fortified citadel of Sighisoara, Romania. Built in the 15th century, it originally belonged to a Dominican monastery. The church features a striking bell tower and a simple yet elegant interior with wooden galleries and a carved pulpit. Visitors can admire the remnants of medieval frescoes and the ornate altarpiece. The church sits on Strada Cetatii, the main cobblestone street of the citadel, surrounded by colorful Saxon houses. Its peaceful atmosphere offers a contrast to the bustling tourist crowds on the square below. The church is still used for worship, and its tower provides panoramic views of the town and surrounding hills.

A bit of history

Constructed in the late 15th century as part of a Dominican monastery, the church later became Lutheran after the Reformation. It has survived wars and fires, retaining its Gothic character. The monastery was dissolved in the 16th century.
