The Merry Cemetery in Săpânța is unlike any burial ground in the world. Instead of somber gray stones, each grave is marked by a hand-painted wooden cross in bright blue, depicting the deceased in a characteristic activity, farming, driving a tractor, or even drinking. The epitaphs, written in witty verse, often poke gentle fun at the person's life or recount a memorable anecdote. Visitors wander among the hundreds of crosses, reading the stories and admiring the folk art. It's a joyful, reflective experience that offers a unique perspective on death and local culture.

Don't miss

  • Read the humorous epitaphs on the tombstones, which tell short stories about the deceased.
  • Admire the hand-painted scenes showing each person's occupation or hobby, such as weaving or woodworking.
  • Notice the distinctive blue color, known as 'Săpânța blue,' used on all crosses.
