Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge is a 1,100-acre freshwater lagoon situated within the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge complex. It is a critical habitat for migratory and resident birds, including the endangered West Indian whistling-duck and the white-cheeked pintail. Visitors can walk along the refuge's trails and observation platforms to view flocks of waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. The lagoon's calm waters and surrounding dry forest create a peaceful setting for birdwatching and photography. The refuge also offers interpretive signs about the local ecology.
Don't miss
- Spot migratory waterfowl such as ducks, herons, and the rare West Indian whistling-duck.
- Walk the short interpretive trail to observation platforms overlooking the lagoon.
- Photograph the serene landscape, especially during the winter bird migration season.
