Church of Santa Maria do Olival is one of Tomar's oldest monuments, built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar. Its simple, unadorned facade reflects the Templar austerity, while inside the nave is lined with tombs of Grand Masters and knights. The church's single bell tower and rose window are notable. It was a model for later Templar churches across Portugal and remains a key site for understanding the order's history.
Don't miss
- See the tombs of Templar Grand Masters, including Gualdim Pais, founder of Tomar.
- Admire the Romanesque-Gothic portal and rose window.
- Note the stark interior, devoid of ornamentation, typical of Templar architecture.
