Pico do Areeiro is a striking mountain summit in central Madeira, reaching 1,818 meters above sea level. It is a prime starting point for the famous PR1 trail to Pico Ruivo, the island's highest peak. The summit area features a modern visitor center, observation decks, and a café. In the early morning, visitors are treated to a sea of clouds below and a spectacular sunrise. The rocky terrain is stark and otherworldly, contrasting with the lush valleys far below.

Don't miss

  • Watch the sunrise from the summit, with the sun rising above a blanket of clouds.
  • Hike the PR1 trail from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo (about 3 hours one way).
  • Explore the small cave-like tunnel near the summit that leads to a hidden viewpoint.
